Discuss what the theme father and son could be?

    Love
    Support
How a father can raise his son
    Reliability: father as role model
    Expectations

    Teacher and student

We should look at the words, write what associations we were getting? Put them into word classes and then write a short text about our relationship to our mother or father.

    Characterization
Characterization is the process by which the writer reveals the personality of a character. Characterization is revealed through direct characterization and indirect characterization.
Direct Characterization Is what you are told about a person
Indirect Characterization shows things that reveal the personality of a character.
Speech What does the character say? How does the character speak?
Thought What is revealed through the characters private thoughts and feelings?
Effect on others towards the character What is revealed through the characters effect on other people? How do other characters feel or behave in reaction to the character?
Actions What does the character do? How does the character behave?
Looks What does the character look like? How does the character dress?
    The assignment:
    • Work in pairs: Decide whether direct or indirect characterization is used in the song “Father and Son” by Cat Stevens.
Indirect characterization, you don’t get information’s about the persons. But there are some hint in the text, that can help making a characterization of the persons in the text
    • Draw a mind map for both the father and the son, where you find examples in the text that characterizes them. What do we learn about the characters and their relationship?
    • Bonus question: What else could we look at when we analyze the lyrics?

  3. To day we continued working with the text: Indian camp. Witch is a text about a father and a son. We have been working with the questions below:

    1) Who is the main character? And how do you know? Define the point of view (who tells the story? Is it a first person point of view (I) or third person point of view (he/she/it/they)?) of the story.
The boy, Nick, and it is a third person focusing on Nick.

    2) Characterization (direct and indirect) of Nick’s father – as a doctor and as a father. (Give examples)
He is a doctor and a father (direct). He is a very explaining father (indirect). He is a wise person (indirect). He has Egger for his son to become a doctor (indirect). He is a good doctor (indirect).
How is the relationship between father and son? It is a good relationship between father and son, because they respect each other. Nick helps his father; he is his father’s intern. Nicks father is a medical guide for Nick. Example: “does women always have such a hard time having babies?”
Why does he use the variant name forms “Nick” and “Nickie”, “Dad” and “Daddy”? Because “Dad” and “Nick” is when they are serious, and “Daddy” and “Nicky” are when they are relaxed/private. Nick also use “daddy” when he is uncomfortable, example: when the Indian has killed him self.

    3) What role does Uncle George play in the story? He is just in the bag ground and taking it as it comes. He is helping with the labour, holding the woman. He is the connection between the Indians and the doctor: he communicates with the Indians. He is the real father of the baby.
THEME: The critic Arthur Waldhorn says that the Nick Adams stories are about “the terror of learning to live with the terrible.” Is this what the story is about? It is about a father and son relationship; the father is a doctor and wants the son to be a doctor to. It is also about learning of life and dead; realizing that people sometimes kill them selves; dead is a part of life.
Hemingway was nearly killed in Italy during World War I. The theme of death haunted him for a lifetime. What does this story say about death? It is not a sad Thing, but it is just a part of Life.

    4) How are men and women described in this story? Women are stronger than men. What roles do they play? (e.g. in connection with such a traditionally feminine event as child birth) Women are being strong in the text. Seen with the woman in labour and the man kills him self. But the women also need help and the doctor (a man) is the only one that can help her. The other women assist as helpers.

    5) Comment on the title (Why not for instance “Father and Son”?)
Because it is about an experience in the Indian camp. The title is underlines the natural process of giving birth/natural processes in general. The title seems irrelevant – it should be something about giving birth or dying/dead.

    6) THE ENDING: Comment on the three big questions, Nick asks:
“Do ladies always have such a hard time having labor?”
It isn’t that comment because if you are in a hospital you will get a C-section.
    “Do many men kill themselves?”

    “Is dying hard?”
    He is afraid of dying.
What do you think of the answers Nick’s father gives? He is giving very direct answers. It is the truth. He treats him like an adult; he is teaching about life. Relate the questions to your discussion of theme.
Comment on the last two paragraphs:
    - Describe the atmosphere during the trip back across the lake (see picture on this hand out). Any symbols at work here?? Nick is thinking about life, and he just want to lay back an enjoy it. It is a new day, a new start. The sun is rising (a start of something new), the bass jumping (a sign of life). Uncle Jorge is passing out cigars; a symbol that he is being a father.
    - The very last sentence: What has Nick learned? He has learned about life, learned to appreciate life.
